What Is Kyokushin?

Kyokushin (極真), which means “Ultimate Truth,” is a traditional full- contact karate style originating in Japan. It was founded in the 1950s by Sosai Masutatsu Oyama, who dedicated his life to creating a martial art that blends rigorous physical training with deep philosophical principles.

Kyokushin is recognized worldwide as one of the most demanding and respected systems of karate, training the body, mind, and spirit through discipline, resilience, and practical combat effectiveness.

Philosophy & Principles

Kyokushin is not just a sport or self-defense system — it is a way of life that emphasizes:

Personal growth

Training to push beyond perceived limits and build confidence.

Discipline & respect

Cultivating courtesy, humility, and integrity both inside and outside the dojo.

Strength of character

Learning perseverance, focus, and mental toughness through sustained effort.

Central to Kyokushin’s ethos is the belief that true mastery comes from relentless dedication and lifelong training.

Training: Kihon, Kata & Kumite

Kyokushin training is structured around three core elements:

Fundamental techniques such as stances, strikes, blocks, and kicks that form the foundation of all movement.

Pre-arranged sequences that develop technique,
balance, precision, breathing, and rhythm while
preserving the art’s traditions.

Controlled full-contact fighting that tests technique, timing, endurance, and fighting spirit in realistic conditions.

This balanced system ensures practitioners develop skill, strength, and situational
awareness in every aspect of martial training.

History & Global Growth

From its beginnings in Japan, Kyokushin quickly gained international recognition for its realism and intensity. Organized expansion began in the early 1960s with the establishment of official headquarters and a growing dojo network.

Today, Kyokushin is practiced in over a hundred countries, influencing generations of martial artists and producing some of the world’s toughest competitors.

Sosai Oyama’s legendary training methods — including extreme conditioning and the famed “hundred-man kumite” — continue to inspire students to train with courage, determination, and heart.
